What is mobile data?
Mobile data allows your phone to connect to the internet through a mobile network. Your operator may provide a limited data allowance or charge according to your plan. Understanding your usage can help you avoid unexpected costs.
Know what uses the most data
Text-based websites and messages generally use relatively little data. High-resolution photographs, video streaming, large downloads, online games and automatic app updates can use much more. Some apps also connect in the background when you are not actively using them.
Check your data usage
Most smartphones include a mobile-data usage section in Settings. You can often see which apps use the most data and set a warning or limit. Your mobile operator may also provide a usage checker or account application. Menu names differ between devices.
Reduce unnecessary usage
Disable automatic downloads and app updates over mobile data if appropriate. Restrict background data for apps that do not need it. Choose lower media quality where available and close services you are not using.
Use Wi-Fi thoughtfully
A trusted Wi-Fi connection can help reduce mobile-data consumption. However, an unfamiliar network is not automatically safe. Avoid sensitive transactions on networks you cannot verify, keep your device updated and use secure connections.
