What is a web browser?

A web browser is an application used to open and view websites. Common examples include Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. A browser is not the same as a search engine. A browser displays websites, while a search engine helps you find information and pages.

Visit a website

Open your browser and tap or select the address bar. Enter a website address and choose Go or press Enter. Check the spelling carefully, especially before signing in or entering payment information. A misleading address can lead to a fraudulent website.

Understand links

A link takes you to another page or resource. The visible words do not always reveal the full destination. Check the destination before opening an unfamiliar link, especially if it comes from an unexpected message.

Use tabs and bookmarks

Tabs let you keep several pages open in one browser window. Bookmarks or favourites save useful websites so you can return to them. Close tabs you no longer need and avoid saving private pages on devices shared with other people.

Browse more safely

Keep your browser updated and pay attention to security warnings. A padlock or secure connection does not prove that a website is honest; it only indicates that the connection is encrypted. Check that you are visiting the correct organization before sharing sensitive information.
